Xuan Cheng – OIBA Artistic Director
Oregon Ballet Theater principal Xuan Cheng is celebrated for her “musicality, technical skill, attention to detail, intelligence and heart.” (Dance Magazine International) She “embraces a theatrical sensuality and attack, with a crisp, technical precision,” (The Dance Current) and “innate ability to make simple theatrical devices heartbreaking.” (Stowell/Dance Magazine International) Originally from Chenzhou, China, Cheng attended Guangzhou Ballet School, joined the corps de ballet for Guangzhou Ballet of China (under prima ballerina Dan Dan Zhang), and quickly rose to principal. Her many honors and awards include the Gold Medal in China’s Tao Li Bei World Dance Competition (2006); a finalist in the 8th New York International Ballet Competition (2005); and the Silver Medal in the 3rd Shanghai International Ballet Competition (2004). Upon Édouard Lock’s invitation, she joined La La La Human Steps, and performed in 20 countries across the continents of Europe, Asia, and North America. After dancing with Les Grands Ballet Canadiens, she became an Oregon Ballet Theater principal (2011) and continued to star as Cinderella, Juliet, Giselle, Scheherazade, Aurora in Sleeping Beauty , Odette/Odile in both Christopher Stowell’s and Kevin Irving’s Swan Lake and Teresina in August Bournonville’s Napoli .
Ye Li – OIBA Executive Director
Known for his astonishing technique and sensitive musicality, award-winning choreographer Ye Li presents dynamic, meaningful performance with exquisite detail. Li is Director of the Oregon International Ballet Academy where his works The One and Black and White premiered. His lush and gripping You will Return won 2nd place in the Palm Desert Choreography Festival (2019) among 145 submissions. A multi-award winning performer and previous company member of Les Grands Ballets Canadiens, Li soloed with Oregon Ballet Theatre for four years, performing lead roles in Giselle, Swan Lake, A Midsummer Night’s Dream , Geaorge Balachine’s The Nutcracker, and works choreographed by Forsythe, Duato, Stowell, and Fonte.
