Inspired by the etymology of the word diaspora, this online class aims to physically explore its linguistic roots. Derived from ancient Greek, diaspora describes the process of scattering omething across. Therefore, our focus will be double: experience the “scattering” movement within the body and to direct our movements into criss-crossing directions. Starting with a gentle warm-up to mobilize the whole body, we will explore the quality of scatter with various body parts through improvisation tasks and movement patterns. We will then reinforce our spatial awareness by connecting our movements to the space around us. Our final task will bring together the elements worked throughout the class by combining movement and drawing. Please have a pen and paper handy for drawing at the end of the class. All bodies, abilities and ages are welcome.
